Most Americans have no idea that the U.S. still controls a piece of Cuba more than a century after taking it. Guantanamo Bay Naval Base has been under U.S. control since 1903, when Cuba was forced into a lease agreement that gave Washington complete jurisdiction and control over the land while Cuba technically retained sovereignty. There’s no expiration date on that lease. It only ends if the U.S. chooses to leave or both governments agree to terminate it, which is why the base is still there more than 120 years later. And they will wait another 120 years more.
