To be fair, there are some Israelies that do not serve in the military, specially some Orthodox. Also conscription is at 18 years old or something like that, so anyone younger than that must be a civilian.
Still, most of these captured on the 7th of October were prisoners of war and no “hostages”. And the more we know about what happened that day, the more evident becomes than most of civilians were killed by the IDF while indiscriminately shooting and shelling everything moving on the ground, and even houses in kibbutzim without even knowing who was inside.
