Palestine has been a forefront issue almost my entire life. Public awareness really grew hot when in the 1970s the legendary British actress Vanessa Redgrave openly stood in support of Palestine, and she suffered the typical attacks for it. I was 17 then, when this happened, and I could never understand the ridicule!
// Vanessa Redgrave's public support for Palestine began in the late 1970s, most notably after she produced and narrated the documentary The Palestinian in 1977, which she financed by selling two of her houses. She became a prominent activist for the Palestinian cause, and her views led to significant public and professional repercussions, including a controversial speech at the 1978 Academy Awards where she referred to her critics as "Zionist hoodlums". … Redgrave's support for the Palestinian cause led to boycotts, threats, and public backlash. She was accused of being a terrorist sympathizer, and extremist groups threatened her. Despite the career impact, she continued her activism. //
She is still living, she is 88 now. For decades she’s been a symbol of courage to me, when at the time she came forward there were very, very few who supported her views. I was young, but I did, I felt her deep presence enough that I’ve never forgotten her activism for Palestinians. Aside from her, it was Noam Chomsky’s activism earlier in this century that got me paying attention, particularly his many appearances at the United Nations on behalf of Palestine.
Today, as we confront the open-faced genocide of Palestinians, I look to you, so young, carrying on this tradition and building upon it so heroically, making the sacrifices you have. Back in “my day” there were no real avenues in which to participate. We had no “internet” and the world was not connected in a way to find others and to provide a path. But I just wanted to say to you, Guy, I never had children of my own, but if I had, I would have wanted my child to be just like you. You’re a very brave young man and you figured it out so quickly and nothing stopped you from acting upon your conscience. I would imagine that you have the support of your family. Please thank them for raising such an amazing human being! You are rare. ❤️ #FreePalestine
People give up the struggle because they are afraid—fear is our only enemy. People consider their jobs and families when they are parents. Yet, they still experience unrest and often consent to almost everything. The problem lies in their failure to understand that remaining in temporary comfort while observing the few who are fighting poses a greater risk for them becoming the next prey than if the entire world's population acted together and succeeded once and for all.
If poeple unify and say enough is enough! And put the conduct lines, life will be better to everybody.
The genocide and dispossession of Palestinians began with their very first illegal colony on 31 July 1881. Aptly called “Rishon Le Zion” which translates as “FIRST in Zion.”
You elevated yourself Guy by being brave and taking a stand, you will always have the support of free people no matter what geography, color or religion they belong to.
You give humanity hope. Your generation will be better than ours.
