Long before the watermelon became a coded symbol of resistance, Palestine was known for its oranges, until Zionism took that too.
This is the story of the forgotten story of Jaffa oranges, once a global export proudly grown by Palestinian farmers until Israel kept the fruit, kept the label, and built a national brand off of stolen labor, stolen soil, and a vanished people.
Even symbols of life and sustenance get repackaged by settler colonialism. Today, the watermelon fills that role, sharing the same colors as the Palestinian flag — immediately recognizable to anyone who knows what’s being silenced. Knowing that history means knowing how deep the theft goes.
