Every time the left tried to build power, liberals sided with the boot. Liberal centrists throughout history refused to align with socialists and communists, even as fascist movements grew in the streets. In Germany, the Social Democrats helped ban the communists before Hitler banned them. In Italy, liberal elites backed Mussolini to stop worker uprisings and got a dictatorship for their trouble.
We’re watching the same cowardice play out in the United States right now. Fascism doesn’t rise alone, it gets escorted in by people who’d rather lose to the right than share with the left.
